Benfica Moves into Quarterfinals of Champions League

Benfica has a foot into the quarterfinals of the Champions League after they defeated Brugge club. This is a comeback for them, especially since they lost out to Liverpool for which they did not get into the last eight teams last season. Now they would be facing Liverpool again in Lisbon. This would be during the second leg of the championship which will be on 7th March.

 

 

Benfica’s performance in the match with Club Brugge makes them look promising. That is also a reason they have made it to the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League. This victory came with a score of 2-0. The game was in Belgium in the first leg of the tournament. They scored both goals in the second half. The game was held at Jan Breydelstadion. Joao Mario opened and scored from the penalty spot. This was after the match restarted and when David Neres came on as a substitute. Now they are league leaders for Portugal. It remains to be seen whether they can defeat Liverpool whom they will play on March 7th.  (more…)

            COLOSSUS LIVERPOOL COULD MOVE IN SOON TO SIGN &£107.4 MILLION PLAYER

In the summer transfer window, Liverpool splashed the cash to sign Uruguayan striker, Darwin Nunez, from Benfica. Now, they are interested in luring yet another South American player from the Eagles. The starlet in question is Argentine midfielder, Enzo Fernandez. The 21-year-old moved to the Liga Nos giants in the summer transfer window and has already proved to be brilliant.

According to a story covered by O Jogo (press image provided below), Enzo has managed to achieve growing prominence since he arrived at Benfica, who are already expecting attacks from big clubs in the winter transfer window. The renowned Portuguese news source have mentioned that Liverpool are one of the ‘colossuses’ who could move in soon to sign the La Albiceleste midfielder. However, president, Rui Costa, is confident the player will not leave in January and the mammoth release clause of £107.4million (120 million euros) gives him the peace of mind. (more…)

BENFICA DRAWN AGAINST PSG, OTHERS

Portuguese giants Benfica have known their Champions League group stage opponents after the draw took place in the Turkish city of Istanbul on Thursday. Benfica sealed their place in the Champions League this season via the playoffs. They had to go through the playoffs after finishing third behind Sporting Lisbon and champions FC Porto in the Portuguese top flight last season.

Benfica gave a good account of themselves in the Champions League last season after they stunned Dutch champions Ajax Amsterdam in the round of 16 as underdogs thereby making it to the quarterfinals.At the quarterfinal stage, Benfica were knocked out by Liverpool who were losing finalists eventually. ABERDEEN CLOSING IN ON STRIKER DEAL

Scottish Premiership giants Aberdeen are on the verge of signing striker Luis Lopes from Portuguese side Benfica. The 22-year-old attacking talenthas never played for the first team at Benfica, but he’s a regular for the Benfica B team. Lopes has 11 goals in 42 appearances for Benfica B.


Lopes, 22, nicknamed Duk, has represented both Portugal and Cape Verde on the international scene. The attacker played for Portugal at Under-18 and Under-19 levels before he made the decision to represent Cape Verde at senior level. He made his debut for Cape Verde at senior level last month. TAVARES SET FOR HIBERNIAN MEDICAL

Scottish Premiership side Hibernian are leading the race to sign Jair Tavares from Benfica in the Portuguese top flight. This is according to Edinburgh News as it was revealed that the winger will undergo his medical at Hibernian on Wednesday.


Tavares, 21, has attracted the interest of Hibernian and other clubs on the back of his impressive displays for the Benfica B-team during the just concluded season. Hibs are said to be in pole position for the Benfica player. (more…)

Tottenham could be ready to bid for Sporting CP midfielder Joao Palhinha amid interest from Premier League rivals. According to Jornal de Noticias (h/t Sport Witness), Tottenham are interested in signing Portuguese midfielder Joao Palhinha in the summer and plan to make a bid to test Sporting CP’s resolve.


Tottenham could be entering into a decisive transfer market in recent years, with Antonio Conte expected to spearhead the charge. Spurs will surely be hoping to qualify for the Champions League through league standings to boast better chances to attract players they want. (more…)

PREMIER LEAGUE TARGET SPEAKS ON FUTURE

Benfica striker Darwin Nunez has refused to rule out a move away from his Portuguese club this summer in his latest interview as monitored by English publication Daily Star. When asked about his future at Benfica shortly after the second leg clash with hosts Liverpool in the Champions League quarterfinals, Premier League target Nunez said that his focus is on Benfica at the moment before adding that we will see at the end of the season.

Uruguayan international Nunez is widely regarded as one of the best young strikers on the European football scene and he showed his qualities as a striker over the course of the two legs against Liverpool in the last eight as far as this season’s Champions League campaign is concerned. (more…)
